D’Angelo Honored & Laid To Rest In Virginia Over The Weekend
Family, friends and music legends gathered over the weekend in Virginia to honor soul legend D’Angelo, whose music and voice defined an era.
According to People, the soul legend was laid to rest at Saint Paul’s Baptist Church in Henrico, Va., just outside of Richmond, on Saturday, Nov. 1. The service took place nearly two weeks after D’Angelo’s passing on Oct. 14 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 51 years old.
Among those who were in attendance at the funeral were Lauryn Hill, H.E.R., Questlove, DJ Premier and Stevie Wonder, who performed a heartfelt tribute to the late soul singer. His presence at the ceremony, among the many others, showed the deep respect D’Angelo earned from several music artists throughout his career.

D’Angelo’s former bands, The Soultronics and The Vanguard, also performed musical tributes during the celebration of life.
Former President Barack Obama also sent in a heartfelt letter that was read during the service, reflecting on D’Angelo’s contributions to the music industry and offering his condolences to his family and loved ones.
His funeral program, shared on social media, read, “Through music, love, and light, Michael D’Angelo Archer’s spirit will shine forever.”
The soul trailblazer, whose real name is Michael Eugene Archer, leaves behind three children. Michael Archer Jr., who he shares with the late R&B star Angie Stone, who died in March 2025 following a tragic car accident— a daughter, Imani and a younger son, Morocco.
Known for his groundbreaking albums Brown Sugar, Voodoo and later returning after a decade long hiatus with Black Messiah, D’Angelo redefined soul and neo-soul for a generation of artists. His style, infused with heavy gospel, funk and jazz influences, was timeless. Several artists he admired from Prince to George Clinton, revered him as a once-in-a-lifetime, timeless talent. Though insanely private throughout his career, he has made a lasting impression on music and his authenticity as not only an artist, but a person.
